Google Trends Throwdown

Humor, Internet, Technology

I spend way too much time on the internet, and today while checking out some stuff on Google Trends, I start comparing different search terms against their competitors to see who was getting more search volume.  Some of it was about what I expected, while others were a bit of a surprise.  So without further ado, here are some Google Trends Throwdowns.

Facebook vs MySpace

Facebook vs MySpace

There was a time when MySpace was more popular than Facebook, part of which had to do with Facebook requiring you to be a college student to use it.  Those days are gone, and it’s clear to see that Facebook has separated itself from MySpace in a big way.

Google vs Apple

Google vs Apple

This could be a skewed result, but either way, it’s part of the Google Trends Throwdown.  While Google and Apple had tried to be friendly for a while, Google’s Android platform gaining popularity on mobile phones has certainly put them at odds with each other.

Apple vs Microsoft

Apple vs Microsoft

Oh how the tables have turned.  Years ago Microsoft was dominating Apple, but in recent years, Apple has closed the gap and is working towards being the more searched on company.  I’m sure the advent of the iPhone, iPad, and iPod has been a major contributor to this.

Google Android vs Apple iPhone

Google Android vs Apple iPhone

Granted, six years ago neither of these existed, and up until nearly 3 years ago there wasn’t even an Android to be searching on.  While Google’s Android platform has made huge leaps forward in securing market share on mobile phones, Apple’s iPhone is still the one everybody wants to know about.  I’m betting that the spikes in search volume coincide with Apple making new announcements about the iPhone.

Daily Show vs Fox News

Daily Show vs Fox News

Jon Stewart has done little to hide his disdain for Fox News and their TV “personalities”.  In light of the Daily Show’s popularity, I’ll admit to being surprised to see the huge search volume for Fox News compared to the Daily Show.

Daily Show vs Colbert Report

Daily Show vs The Colbert Report

I suspect that Colbert would be heartbroken to see this one.  Given their impending “clash” on the National Mall with Stewart’s Rally to Restore Sanity and Colbert’s March to Keep Fear Alive, this seemed an appropriate Google Trends Throwdown.

Marvel vs DC Comics

Marvel vs DC Comics

I kinda predicted this one, given Marvel’s recent string of successful movies based on their comics.  That being said, I had expected DC Comics to put up a bit of a fight.

Superman vs Batman

Superman vs Batman

The two biggest players when it comes to DC Comics, I wasn’t surprised to see Batman win this one given the success of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.  Search spikes definitely coincide with the releases of the movies.

Coke vs Pepsi

Coke vs Pepsi

For all intents and purposes, this one was a tie.  While Coke did technically win in the end, Pepsi has nothing to be ashamed of with their loss to the beverage giant.

Yankees vs Red Sox

Yankees vs Red Sox

Another one that was a virtual tie.  Notice the spike for the Red Sox in 2004 when they finally won the World Series.  This is proof that for all the money and marquee players the Yankees bring in, Red Sox Nation is strong.

Playstation 3 vs Wii vs XBox 360

PS3 vs XBox 360 vs Wii

I wasn’t surprised to see the Wii take this one, given its broader appeal to casual gamers and families.  I was surprised at the poor showing by the Playstation 3 though.

Chevrolet vs Ford vs Honda vs Toyota

Chevy vs Ford vs Honda vs Toyota

Chevy being part of the GM bailout probably didn’t make people want to search for them.  I was surprised by Ford taking the crown in this Google Trends Throwdown, as I sorta expected either Honda or Toyota to be the winner, especially with the popularity of the Toyota Prius.
