Brock Davis is an artist many times over, in a multitude of ways. He creates visual art with a variety of mediums, sometimes anything he can get his hands on. He is also a musician, writer, graphic designer, and creative director at Carmichael Lynch in Minneapolis, MN. Much-interviewed, Brock has a list of credits that rivals some of the most prolific artists out there. In addition to his impressive portfolio, Brock also did a project called “Make Something Cool Every Day” where he created a small piece of art every day for a year, from January 1 to December 31 of 2009. Here are some of the fruits of that labor, as well as some other pieces of his art that we love.
Make Something Cool Every Day
Here are 7 pieces from the Make Something Cool Every Day project
From 1/16/2009, “Do You See the Ghost?” Well? Do you?
This is the piece from 1/25/2009. It’s a shattered banana peel. The name? “Shattered Banana Peel.” How did he do that, anyway?
2/20/2009 – “Decowpitation.” If you cut a cow, does it not bleed (milk)?
4/4/2009 – “Fatal Paper Airplane Crash.”
5/5/2009 – “Death by Paper Football.” I never understood that game, anyway.
5/12/2009 – “Da Vinci’s Spok.” Who else but the great artistic and scientific master could think of such a wondrous creation?
5/20/2009 – “Stubble Self Portrait.” He did it with a toothpick. Imagine moving tiny hairs around with a toothpick to create a picture of yourself? Brock can do it.
Other Artwork
These are other pieces of art by Davis that we also like a great deal. So will you.
Davis says on his website that he wanted to make this for quite some time, and that he had the help of a Star Wars expert to help him with the details.
This is a piece for NY Times Magazine in conjunction with an April 2011 article by Paul Krugman called “Building a Green Economy.”
A play on the cover of Pink Floyd’s album Dark Side of the Moon, this piece is made from pieces of different Doritos bags, with a Doritos in the center. Davis says there is a flavor of Doritos for every color on the album cover.
Called “Exhibitionist Coffee Cup,” Davis created this when he was supposed to be doing something else.
Called “Gummy Bearskin Rug,” this is probably my favorite of the group. It’s so simple, but so clever.
Brock Davis continues create art of everyday items. He also creates photographs with googly eyes on people, and takes photos of his beautiful daughter. He sees art everywhere, which is one of the things we love most about him.
